Life hacks

A short collection of life hacks I've learned about.

- ⓘbaking soda vs baking powder
- read Recipes for baking (sugar free/less), cooking and kitchen knowledge.
- ⓘthe magic of glue
- ⓘthe magic of tape
- ⓘthe magic of fluids
- ⓘthe curse of plastics
- ⓘbattery tips - or: the magic and curse of batteries
- ⓘthe magic&curse of LEDs: why LEDs in lamps are mostly bad for you
- as a woman with abdominal pain, get a heating belt you can use with a power-bank as a portable alternative to a hottie, e.g. a cheap one from 🛒Aliexpress (~9€).

Secret tips

Secret tips

Have your progesterone level checked! There are plant extracts of raspberry bush (Rubus idaeus) which will naturally fix your hormonal balance - no need for birth control pills.
Quit/reduce eating sugar, it helps (see recipes for more knowledge).
Check if taking zinc helps. Feel if avoiding dairy products has an effect on you.

- Don't smell like a perfume shop: Get zinc deodorant, I can recommend the cream from Greendoor (they have sticks too) (no affiliate! You can get it in drugstores too). Bonus: If you have t-shirts that smell after a few hours of wearing, you will be able to wear them for 2 days again (no shit!). DO NOT USE ALUMINIUM!.
- For skin peeling use salt grains in suitable soap. If pimple has hair in pore, pull hair first with tweezers. Get injection needles to use for cosmetics (they are sterile, lasercut-sharp and cheap).
- Upgrade your watch with Chinese sapphire glass from aliexpress (~15-20€) and press in with wood in bench vise
- Upgrade your hifi-stereo amp or car radio with bluetooth
- either for 30pin iPod connector or 3.5mm/RCA cinch or with FM-transmitter (~3€))
- silica gel bag in a box for de-humidification / drying: reuse by baking dry again before it gets soggy.
- Learn key combinations, play typing games like https://zty.pe and proper finger typing. Don't be a reliant mouse nudger or touch fondeler.

Life Lessons

Following is randomly written down wisdom - or so I find.

  • Rule(s) No. 1: Think yourself. Always check the sources. Pay attention to meta info, e.g. time and author.
  • You are responsible for the stuff you buy: Throwing away (for whatever reason) is no taking care of! Sell or donate the things you don't need. Always think twice and wait a day before you buy new stuff. Only buying what you really need is the motto. The one who does not buy saves 100% off.
  • Try making it better than you found it: The world should be a better place than it is now.
  • If you have a product/project and abandon it, release the sources - it should be an obligation.

I'm ready! Give me good life lessons

I'm ready! Give me good life lessons

- watch your thoughts [...]
- If you renovate your flat/house, throw out the old radiant heaters and get convection heaters! Read why or just look at the pictures
- Write down and archive the stuff you do cleanly. No education and experiences means stillstand. Stillstand always degrades to less. Love and invest (esp.time and knowledge) into your children.
- Everybody sucks until they don't.
- Keep your curiosity. Act. Failures are an educational lesson and no soul burdon.
- Never be a prisoner of your past. It was just a lesson, not a life sentence.
- Always see before if there is an open source alternative.
- Learn about Battery Tips: Alkaline BBD, LiPo storaging, BMS salvage
- Do not charge PS4 controller (DS4) over quick charge (QC) wall chargers, you will probably kill PMIC (power management IC)
- Avoid Arduino, it is for playing around. Start your project with FreeRTOS, Zephyr or something similar serious.
- Always label your components.
- “Use the Flux, Luke!” - Soldering SMD without flux is just wrong. Clean afterwards with isopropyl alcohol and toothbrush. For de-soldering consider adding fresh, lead-based solder to unleaded/old joints.
- Always ask questions - yourself too. If you found a solution, it is not the only one. Find more and/or keep refining. Change your angles. Be precise, sort your words first.
- Flush&Wash: Soap works, you know?! Don't gross out others.
- Always use flexible or PCB-wire on PCB pads. The leverage of thick rigid wire might rip the pad off.
- Always think before typing and/or pressing return. always read output like errors and warnings.
- RTFM: Read The Freaking Manual. Use the wiki pages. See –help or man pages. Look for documentation/tutorials/guides/disasseblies. Read the technical comments/posts.
- Always search if there is a good answer before. Communities like the ones on reddit and expert forums are awesome, you get directed to the knowledge needed. Always report back HOW you have fixed the problem. There are even awesome Discord and/or Telegram communities.
- When you buy a product, get spare parts immediately too. You can always sell the parts, they will be out of stock sooner or later.
- Be kind :) Life/Universe will give back what you seed. Music can influence your energy/mood/being - words too.
- remind yourself of good, non-violent communication and four sides model (Schulz von Thun). ¿Questions can also deliver a message. Always feel into the other person. Tryout probable outcomes.
- Don't rely on AI, there might be better ways - don't be lazy. First and last part of conversation have higher weight. Learn about its function and token and probabilities and stuff.
- No backup? No pity. Ok, yes, but why do you make me feel it? Could have been different if acted before. Try to recover pictures/photos with this.
- Reduce, reuse, recycle: both in software and RL! Collect your garbage. You are responsible for what you get.
- Leftovers as takeaway.
- Quit smoking. If you stop smoking, don't litter env with tips of cigarettes. Get a portable ashtray. A vaporizer can be an alternative to not quitting (with unknown long term consequences due to deep lung inhalation).
- Improve on presentations: If you take 3 things to improve before and you succeed on 2 of them, you are way good!
- Everything done daily for 3 weeks becomes normality. Go by bike instead of car.
- Take 3 rule: If everybody takes 3-5 pieces of trash, the world is a cleaner place. Always leave places a bit better than it was before.
- for transporting bulky things in your car, lay in an old backplane of a cupboard on the trunk floor for sliding and protection.
- You can consider yourself to be disabled, if you go by car for short distances w/o transporting huge/lots of things. The car is your motorized wheelchair. Take your bike, get some saddlebags.
- Learn how to skate and teach your kids - it is awesome for short distances. I even get crates of water with my longboard (just put cardboard under so it doesn't slip).
- No vertical videos! Except you only want to address phone people, then it's fine.
- On eBay, use bracket syntax to search for multiple keywords: (name1, name2). For example, Sony (Ericsson, Ericcson) will include possible typos. E.g. use (Sony, Apple) to search for either Sony or Apple (not both together). To exclude a keyword, use a minus sign '-', e.g. -case
- Learn some German grammar: https://deppenleerzeichen.de, https://seitseid.de, https://deppenapostroph.info
- See similar pages for English: https://apostrophe.org.uk and https://unnecessaryquotes.com

Nice2know (technical)

- get higher resolution profile pictures on PayPal by changing end of URL from “/image_26.img” to “/image_20.img”
- the QWERTY layout was designed to reduce typewriter jams by spacing out commonly paired letters.
- they are called “upper case” and “lower case” letters because they were separated into two boxes during book printing invention times.
- PS/2 keyboard connector has N-key rollover (NKRO) and uses hardware interrupts (IRQ 1 for keyboard, IRQ 12 for mouse) and is therefore theoretically with less latency than USB, which uses polling (at 125Hz-1kHz).
- HMDI over DVI (even with audio) is possible with a MCU nowadays O.o, e.g. PiPico RP2040/RP2350
- ESP32-C6 RISC-V MCU does not only have WiFi/BT/Zigbee but also an official elf-loader. There is ASIO too.
- TinyGL runs crossplattform and on several MCUs even with 3D (awesome for GUI)
- glitching MCUs for dumping firmware is feasible. Revive your bricked MCUs, revert PS4 to prev FW.

Web links

- https://bahn.expert: More accurate schedules than Deutsche Bahn itself. marudor.de was created to join different APIs of DB. Watch his talks at CCC.
- https://archive.org is your best friend (there are alternatives, e.g. https://archive.is/).
- Google translate is awesome for translating non-english websites (just paste the link).
- Find information on reddit; always check different sources, expert forums and even youtube videos.
- If you must use AI, see https://duck.ai - a more data friendly service of https://duckduckgo.com search provider. (Use AI for starting points and pages you can read up on. Don't forget to check/validate your sources! AI uses up tons of energy, think if you can do w/o).
- There is a lawsuit which proves that Google search has gotten really bad on purpose to keep users clicking on more adlinks (startpage.com is an anonymized, profile-less google search, which is sucks as much as google). Besides https://duckduckgo.com, try out Qwant, Searx or even decentralized Yacy. For metasearch try https://metager.de
- For english translations dict.cc (and its mobile(m.)/pocket. versions), [leo.org] also for franko-languages. AI is good in translations and grammar correction too if you precise your questions.
- There are so called "awesome lists" on github. Even ultimate awesome lists. Pages with listings of awesome lists exist too. I have my own collection of links and knowledge

Android

Android is a crippled Linux, but there is sadly no way around it anymore. Consider using (official) LineageOS, microG derivate or /e/OS. For good long-term support, check devices for postmarketOS. With the latter you can also use your phone as a home server.

F-Droid is a must-have app store:

  1. F-Droid = unavoidable. Or see Droid-ify
  2. Aurora Store, if you have no GApps or use microG.

Some apps from F-Droid: (unsorted)

Some apps from F-Droid: (unsorted)

  • AdAway
  • AccA (requires root), allows to set charging speed
  • Firefox (+install uBlock origin plugin)
  • Transistor (for webradio)
  • NewPipe (alternative youtube app) or LibreTube or PipePipe
  • AnySoftKeyboard (or Traditional T9)
  • MuPDF
  • KeePassDX / KeePassDroid
  • OpenCamera
  • FindMyDevice (have phone unmuted when needed)
  • OsmAnd~
  • Offi (Öffi app für Verkehrsmittel)
  • Insular (Island apps into snd/work-profile)
  • whoBIRD
  • Gadgetbridge
  • QRAlarm
  • RetroArch

Firefox Plugins

Simplified speaking, for desktops there is only Chromium-based browsers (Blink engine) or Firefox (Gecko engine) (and Webkit/Safari for Mac/iOS). Support diversity and use the only major independent alternative: Firefox or one of its derivates.

  • Use rubber: don't surf the internet without blocking by uBlock origin for firefox.
  • Save the environment: if you must listen to music as yt-video, audiostream only with Music Mode for YouTube™ - save the bandwidth.
  • Avoid industry sugar: I don't care about cookies plugin to get rid of cookie banners. 🍪 If you create your HP, avoid cookies altogether.
  • To save some tutorials in a single html page that is portable and looks as original, use Save Page WE
